History of Patapsco Senior High School

Patapsco’s Ring

is a standard collegiate style of 10 karat yellow gold. Featured on the left side of the ring is an eagle perched on a cannon. The word “Patriots” is inscribed below this design which was borrowed from an artillery uniform from the War of 1817 era; on the right side is the Patapsco seal, which is the head of a Patriot situated between the Star Spangled Banner and the Maryland Flag. Beneath this is the Patapsco Crest. The crest is divided into three sections. The top features an eagle perched on a book of knowledge, symbolizing learning. The symbol for service and citizenship is in the lower left which is a star and an olive branch. Athletics and sportsmanship are symbolized by the winged foot in the lower right section of the crest. A line of waves, which remind the wearer that “Patapsco” is an Indian word meaning “water with white caps”, divides the crest. Below the crest is featured the school motto “Pax Per Sapeintiam”, or Peace Through Education. The stone is a red synthetic ruby which is surrounded by the school name. Between the stone and the turreting, which represents a fortress, are two stars which are to remind us that Maryland was one of the original thirteen states and is still a member of this great country. The original sample of the school ring will remain in the school for posterity.

School Motto

As far as can be learned, the Patapsco motto is original, the thought of Patapsco’s first student council president, Bill Unkle. Peace through education was first mentioned by him in a meeting of the ring committee. This can best be translated into Latin, Pax per sapientiam”. On the original school ring, the motto is erroneous, “Pax per sapientia”. This was corrected after the first ring.

School Seal

The school seal as is displayed in the main office is actually the work of the school ring committee assisted by the artists of the Balfour and Dieges and Clust ring companies. The seal appears on most official documents of the student council.

School Mascot

The school mascot is a minuteman. His attire consists of a red, white, and blue revolutionary war uniform to be worn by someone chosen by the student body and appear at most school functions.
